Defense Department Report Concludes Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Pentagon report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question contained particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Potential Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he had the right to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released later this week.
