The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
